The Sand Traps of Life
Bobby Jones, champion golfer, once said, “Have you ever noticed how much golfers practice? Smart businessmen have been quick to take advantage of that, developing public driving ranges where we can practice driving the ball, and putting greens where we can practice our putting.”
But why hasn’t someone developed public sand traps? Sand traps are an inevitable part of the game of golf, and every golfer ought to practice ahead of time how to get out of trouble.
I think that’s good advice for all of us who seek to live a successful Christian life. For though we talk about out being thankful for the blessings that come our way, we must admit that problems and troubles also come our way.
Whether we like them, or not. Whether we are spiritually hot, or not. Whether we are walking with God, or not, trials are a part of our lives. Trouble seems to be woven into the fabric of living.
Some of our distresses are caused by our own sin and foolishness – “Watch your tongue and keep your mouth shut, and you will stay out of trouble.” Proverbs 21:23 NLT
Some difficulties are created by other people – “Lord, have mercy on me. See how my enemies torment me.” Psalm 9:13 NLT
Yet in the book of James we read, “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.” James 1:2-3 NLT
Too often when we face adversity, we want God to do a removing job when He wants to do an improving job.
The Bible assures us that we have a refuge and strong defense in the Lord – “But as for me, I will sing about your power. Each morning I will sing with joy about your unfailing love. For you have been my refuge, a place of safety when I am in distress.” Psalm 59:16
”Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” ESV
